The First-ever EIF's Love Rocks: Celebrating the Biggest Hearts in Entertainment(SM) musical concert brought together some of the biggest names in entertainment history for one unforgettable Valentine's Day.
Chaired by Michael D. Eisner, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, and co-hosted by the Entertainment Industry Foundation and "Entertainment Tonight," the inaugural event paid special tribute to the philanthropic heart of the entire entertainment industry and launched EIF's National Cardiovascular Research Initiative, a new program to raise awareness and funds for heart disease, the leading cause of death in America.
Love Rocks also honored world-renowned rock star Bono of the band U2 for championing causes outside of music and improving the lives of millions of people throughout the world. More than 3,000 entertainment industry executives, celebrities and others came to pay homage to the rock star/activist and enjoy an evening of all-star entertainment.
Musical performances included many of the industry's most loved recording artists including: Lauryn Hill, No Doubt, R.E.M., Res, and a surprise performance from Cher who sang "I Got You Babe" with Michael Stipe. It was the first time Cher sang the duet with anyone other than the late Sonny Bono. The host of the evening was Drew Carey, joined by Saturday Night Live veteran Kevin Nealon, and the guy everybody loves, Ray Romano. Actor Kevin Spacey made an on-stage appearance to salute Bono, and Pformer resident Bill Clinton and Rolling Stone's Mick Jagger offered congratulations via videotape.
Actor Tom Cruise presented his friend with EIF's "Heart of Entertainment" Award." The evening finished with an unforgettable performance by the honoree himself, who joined Michael Stipe on stage to sing U2's "One".
At the event, EIF awarded $1.4 million in research grants to scientists at leading cardiovascular centers.
