COLON CANCER SCREENING LAWS NOW COVER HALF OF U.S. POPULATION
For the first time, more than half of the U.S. population is now covered by state laws that require insurance providers to cover the cost of colon cancer screening tests, according to a new report card issued by a coalition of 11 leading public health groups.

New Report Shows Cancer Death Rates are Falling More Steeply
Cancer may remain the second leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease, causing an expected 559,650 deaths this year, but a recent collaborative report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries shows that these numbers are declining.

Genome code cracked for breast and colon cancers
Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center scientists have completed the first draft of the genetic code for breast and colon cancers. Their report, published online in the September 7 issue of Science Express, identifies close to 200 mutated genes, now linked to these cancers, most of which were not previously recognized as associated with tumor initiation, growth, spread or control.

Most states fail to require insurance coverage of colorectal cancer screening
A new report released today shows nearly two-thirds of states in the U.S. have failed to pass legislation that requires insurance providers to cover the cost of preventive screening for colorectal cancer, despite the fact that it is a highly preventable disease and accounts for $6.5 billion in treatment costs every year.1

Only 18 states make the grade in first-ever colorectal cancer legislation report card.
Even though colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer, only 18 states* have enacted legislation requiring insurance providers to cover the cost of preventative screening. Raymond N. DuBois, M.D., and a team of researchers at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center - whose work was funded in part by the Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (EIF's NCCRA) - have uncovered key evidence on how a specific molecular target (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor) accelerates the growth of precancerous polyps.
