Felicity Huffman Joins with the Entertainment Industry Foundation and AstraZeneca in National Public Education Campaign
Directed Toward Breast Cancer Survivors
Effort aimed at increasing awareness about the risk of breast cancer recurrence and how to reduce it
Los Angeles, Calif. (December 2007) &madash; Award-winning actress Felicity Huffman has been named an ambassador for a new public service campaign targeted toward breast cancer survivors, which will begin airing this fall.
The public service campaign, "If You Were My Sister," was created in partnership between the Women's Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) and AstraZeneca to raise awareness among breast cancer survivors about reducing the risk of recurrence.
"Unfortunately, breast cancer can return, and many women lack vital information about how to reduce their risk of recurrence," Huffman states. "That's why I am involved in this important campaign on behalf of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. We have all had family and friends who are touched by this disease, and I want to help educate women about what they need to know, and can do, to reduce their risk."
Today, more than two million women in the U.S. are breast cancer survivors. Yet many of them lack crucial information about treatment choices after surgery, where to find help and support groups, and why they must be diligent about following the treatment prescribed by their doctors.
"We want all women who have survived breast cancer to know there are good reasons to be optimistic," said Lisa Schoenberg, vice president of specialty care at AstraZeneca. "AstraZeneca is delighted to have this opportunity to partner with Felicity Huffman and EIF on this important breast cancer awareness initiative. Together, we will be able to reach those impacted by this disease with a clear message: there is information available and steps breast cancer survivors can take to reduce their risk of recurrence."
Huffman, an Emmy Award winner and Academy Award nominee, will appear in both a broadcast and print public service announcement (PSA). The broadcast PSA was directed by award-winning Director Patricia Cardoso. The print PSA will reflect the feeling and sentiments of the broader "If You Were My Sister" campaign created by AstraZeneca.

The overarching program is also designed to enhance awareness of the risk of breast cancer recurrence and how to reduce that risk among survivors. The major elements of the campaign are the PSA, both broadcast and print, an interactive Web site called getbcfacts.com, and an educational information kit-all featuring real women who are breast cancer survivors. The campaign encourages the public to learn and share critical information about the risk of breast cancer recurrence.
"For more than 15 years, the Entertainment Industry Foundation has been deeply involved in raising funds for breast cancer research and advocacy and in encouraging women to get screened," said Lisa Paulsen, president and CEO of EIF. "We're thrilled to be part of a campaign that focuses on getting the word out to the growing survivor community about the risk of recurrence, and most importantly, about how to reduce it. We're extremely grateful to Felicity Huffman for volunteering her time to this very worthwhile cause."

After increasing for over two decades, female breast cancer incidence rates leveled off from 2001 to 2003.1 Mortality rates in women have steadily declined since 1990, decreasing by 3.3 percent per year in women younger than 50 and 2.0 percent per year in those 50 years and older.1
