ABOUT EIF OUR PROGRAMS OUR PARTNERS
EIF SNAPSHOT – FEBRUARY 2023
FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear Friends,
In the past few years, as we’ve learned to navigate unpredictability, our reliance on each other has grown. It has deepened our relationships and strengthened our communities as we work together toward shared goals. Our partners have played an important role in this positive transformation.
This month, as we honor Black Americans throughout history, we support our partners at Know Your Rights Camp, founded by Colin Kaepernick, as they hold a camp in Los Angeles to educate and empower the next generation of Black and Brown leaders. Two other partners, Time to Dream Foundation and Hockey Diversity alliance, both launched by Akim Aliu, will distribute copies of his new graphic memoir, Dreamer, to schools across the country. Akim wrote the memoir to inspire young people to persist in following their own dreams. Dreamer was published by Kaepernick Publishing and Scholastic.
Colin and Akim are revered for their athletic ability, but the investments they’ve made in young people in our country will be their greatest legacy.
We appreciate your continued support of EIF and all of our partners and wish you a happy and healthy 2023.
Nicole Sexton

STAND UP TO CANCER
Stand Up To Cancer’s 13th in-person Scientific Summit took place in late January, 2023, bringing together over 350 scientists, donors, and advocates to share knowledge and strategies about translational cancer research projects and cancer clinical trials. Across four exciting days, attendees felt the hope that has inspired SU2C’s efforts from the very beginning: “This is where the end of cancer begins.” SU2C-funded investigators presented their research spanning the development of cutting-edge cancer prevention strategies, diagnostic tools and treatment options. The imperative need to tackle disparities across cancer research, screening and treatment was also a key topic woven throughout the summit. As some of the world’s top cancer researchers shared insights and forged new collaborations, the summit embodied the energy and teamwork needed to continue the charge towards ending cancer as we know it.

TIME TO DREAM FOUNDATION & HOCKEY DIVERSITY ALLIANCE
Akim Aliu ― also known as “Dreamer” ― is a Ukrainian-Nigerian-Canadian professional hockey player whose career took him all around the world and who experienced systemic racism at every turn. Dreamer tells Akim's incredible story, from being the only Black child in his Ukrainian community, to his family struggling to make ends meet while living in Toronto, to confronting the racist violence he often experienced both on and off the ice. This is a gut-wrenching and riveting graphic novel memoir that reminds us to never stop dreaming and is sure to inspire young readers everywhere. Dreamer was published on February 7th by Scholastic and Kaepernick Publishing. Time to Dream Foundation and Hockey Diversity Alliance will gift copies of the book to middle schools across the U.S.
Time to Dream Foundation, founded by Akim Aliu, promotes equality and tolerance not only within hockey and other sports but also within society, advocating for civil rights and fairness. The foundation collaborates with strategic partners to develop and implement programs to help youth feel included by providing moral, financial, and hands-on training to help them reach their ultimate potential in sports and all walks of life.
Co-founded by Akim Aliu and Evander Kane, in solidarity with Trevor Daley, Anthony Duclair, Matt Dumba, Nazem Kadri, Wayne Simmonds, Chris Stewart and Joel Ward, Hockey Diversity Alliance is inspiring a new and diverse generation of hockey players and fans by creating sustainable change within all levels of hockey. At the top, the nonprofit educates and encourages accountability from leagues and leaders, and at the grassroots level, it works to ensure hockey is accessible to anyone who loves the game.
